In the northern part of the city, at the foot of Kodai Mountain, is Tamaki Hot Spring, boasting over 1,300 years of history and excellent spring quality; in the southern part is Shoten Hot Spring, the setting for Soseki Natsume's masterpiece 'Kusamakura'. Located between the Kumamoto and Fukuoka metropolitan areas, with the JR Kyushu Main Line, Kyushu Expressway, and Ariake Ferry nearby, it enjoys excellent transportation access. From Shin-Tamaki Station, Hakata is 40 minutes away, Kagoshima is 1 hour 20 minutes away, and Osaka is 3.5 hours away, making northern Kumamoto an area within day-trip distance of both the Kyushu and Kansai regions.
